The City of Mesquite recently became the first local governmental entity in the state authorized to administer Third Party Skills testing in order for employees to receive their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at a non-Texas Department of Public Safety location. After extensive training, education, and testing, two of the City’s Pubic Works’ managers earned third-party CDL examiner certifications to administer the ‘equipment check’ and driving portions of the CDL exam process and award licenses to employees. Employees must first pass the written part of the CDL exam at a Texas Department of Public Safety Office before taking the ‘equipment check’ and driving portions of the test, administered by City of Mesquite Third Party Skills Examiners. This allows the City to hire employees with or without a CDL license. Kudos to the City of Mesquite!
